There are 18 Link types, all controlled by a link ID. In normal websites, if the same link exists in a number of areas, changing that link is a ton of work, and can result in mistakes or omissions, since the link can be in so many places. With our Link ID system, changing it in the Master Link will affect all instances of that link throughout the site. It's just one of the ways that IntelliFolios offers you greater long-term value by innovative technologies and workflows.

The External Website Link is used when you want the visitor to trigger another website. There are a number of options, but the most often used is option (A):

A) Open in a full-size normal browser window (specify new window or window ID). Window ID is used to recycle the same window with new content.

B) Replace content in current window, which will exit your IntelliFolios site and launch the other site. Only recommended to use if at that point you want your visitor to completely finish with your site.

C) Pop up in a new window with special options:

  • Display any of the following: toolbars, status bar, scrollbars, location bar, menu bar
  • Make resizable
  • X-position
  • Y position
  • Width
  • Height
  • Define Window ID

  • The Internal Navigation Link is used to travel from one page to another without using the main navigation system. This is a very effective way of building a deep site, without overwhelming the visitor with too many pages right away. You can easily build a third, fourth, or even fifth level navigation by creating index pages with word links, and then having the destination pages in hidden sections. You can have the choice of the page title either being hidden when in that section, or seeing the list of pages in the secondary navigation, which normally is not visible.

Internal links can also be used in Frameworks that just have one level of navigation, to create a second level, just by having a list of word links. Often, it is used in combination with a Rollover Page, like in Mario Miotti's site, where clicking on an image loads a page or gallery.

Internal link destinations are specified by defining Section name, Sub-section name, and Item name. Internal links are also used in combination with Quicklinks, graphics in Grid Pages, and graphics in SideBar Extension. It is one of the most-often used link types.

The only disadvantage of using internal links is that they need to be manually updated when any of the destination page changes location outside of its containing section / subsection, resulting in the "path" changing name, which carries a $1 update charge, and needs to be requested by you.

The send message form has become very popular for several reasons:

    1. It is 100% spam-proof. No email address is visible in the code, therefore spambots can't access it.

    2. A person doesn't have to have their email program or account open to send a message.

    3. The site can have the subject line locked, for easier sorting and routing.

The main disadvantage of the form has been that the visitor usually doesn't have a copy of the email for their own records, like you do with using a traditional email program. The IntelliFolios Message Form has an option to send a copy of the email to a provided email address.

The message form can also have a pre-addressed subject line, which you can specify whether the visitor can change it or not. This is suggested, with something like "I saw your site, and wanted to know....", which prompts people who often skip subject lines to put something in, and if they don't then at least you know the email is coming from your site, and not spam.

It is recommended that this be set up as a Quicklink, a graphical button in the Sidebar Extension, or placed on your Contact page.

The email link is the simplest, most traditional email communication method.

It is fine if that is what you have had on your previous HTML page, which was indexed by search engines, and you don't have problems with spam. It is also likely not going to get spammed if you just have a Flash version, or if you have an HTML version, but the email link is setup as a Quicklink. We can specifically turn off email Quicklinks when making the HTML site.

The sendmail link can also have a pre-addressed subject line, which the visitor can always change. This is suggested, with something like "I saw your site, and wanted to know....", which prompts people who often skip subject lines to put something in, and if they don't then at least you know the email is coming from your site, and not spam.

We often suggest a unique email address that is used on the site only, done as a forward ($5), which helps in sorting email as well as dealing with spam.

The Media Popup Link is used for when you want a piece of still media to come up in its own pop-up window.

Note that there is a free global option to have one of the three sizes of files popup automatically when clicking on any media object within the site, so this is designed more for either text links, Quicklinks, or buttons.

    The options are:

  • choose which of the three sizes of Media Object to use (regular, screen or variable)
  •

  • whether to display the description text under the Media Object
  •

    The price is $5

When adding any type of media or files to your site, there are essentially two categories:

    1) Files that play natively within the latest Flash sites, like IntelliFolios sites do, are JPEG images, SWF animations, FLV movies, MP3 sounds, or PDF's converted to FLASHPAPER. The built-in options for each will be used, such as playback controls for videos. If you do not want the file to play within the site, but instead, want it to pop up (maybe because it is a greater dimension than the size of the media area in that page), than we would use this type of link, with the option "display in window as a Flash file".

    2) Other common types of files that are viewed on HTML sites are PDF documents, AVI movies, MOV movies, MPG movies, etc. To display these files, we use the File link. These are the options available:

    A. open in a new window

    B. download file

    C. pop up in special window with the following specs:

  • show toolbars
  • show scrollbars
  • resizable
  • horizontal (X) position on screen (in pixels, from top left)
  • vertical (Y) position on screen (in pixels, from top left)
  • width of window
  • height of window

  • This link enables a page formatted as an Article Page to come up in a popup window. Here is an example. You may wonder why you would need this?

It is ideal for small definitions or more info about something, without resorting to internal links, and taking the visitor away from the main page. For example, the optional, free copyright or terms of use link on the bottom of a site usually is linked to a popup Article Page. It can also be used as a contact page, allowing the contact info to be up while continuing to navigate the site.

If you have a media-centric site and choose a Framework that has a small footprint, or has a relatively small area for Info Pages, but then have one page which has extensive text, you could have it pop up as a much larger page, making it faster to read without scrolling.

If you have information that would be good to print or be able to copy, but don't want an HTML version, this is a good solution. It's great for things like directions with a simple map.

The popup page has the same limitations as the HTML version, meaning it cannot support slideshow sequencing of images. A slideshow ill just be shown as a stacked list. The text will cascade when the window is resized. It doesn't have scrollbars.

There is some trial-and-error involved in sizing the content and text properly, so it is $20 per page, plus the cost of the Article Page.

The price of this link includes the database itself. You can have multiple contact lists in your account, each one having a different purpose. For example, one can be for subscribing to an email newsletter, while another one is for a sales rep to contact them. Multiple lists are also great for separating out interest in specific items or people represented.

Database is managed through the Access Site, and can be viewed online, as well as being able to be downloaded to integrate into local databases, mailing lists, or spreadsheets, and be cleared for a fresh start, to prevent doubling of info.

    The options include:

  • List name (if having more than one)
  • override the default for field 1 "your name"
  • override the default for field 2 "your email address"
  • override the default for field 3 "your company"
  • insert your logo graphic (536 pixels wide)
  •

Link, including database, is $200. Additional Links for different lists are $20 each.

It is recommended that this be set up as a Quicklink, a graphical button in the Sidebar Extension, or placed on your Contact page.

This form allows a visitor to your site to be on a specific page, including viewing a specific gallery item, and then send an email to someone which will include a specially-created link which will bypass the main page, and open that specific page.

The form allows the viewer to put in their name, email address, their friend's email, subject line, and a message. The link that is generated can also be copied, or bookmarked.

The form can be branded in a similar fashion to the send message form and add to database forms.

It is recommended that this be set up as a Quicklink, or a graphical button in the Sidebar Extension.

Normally, in a Flash site, and many database-driven HTML sites, you cannot accurately bookmark a specific page. This link will bring up the bookmarking command in the visitor's browser, and generate a bookmark that is both accurately descriptive, and directly links to the specific page in the Flash site, which couldn't be done without this feature. The HTML versions can be bookmarked without any special procedures.

Another advantage of having this is to be able to quickly generate direct links to any page or project in your site, to send to clients, post on forums, or have online articles link to.

It is recommended that this be set up as a Quicklink, or a graphical button in the Sidebar Extension.

IntelliFolios sites offer you the ability to have the most popular and trusted e-commerce system available, PayPal. The best thing is that PayPal is also the most affordable system for low-volume online transactions. There is no setup fee, monthly minimums, or equipment to buy or maintain. You can even have PayPal setup for putting deposits on services that are normally invoiced and paid by check.

All you do is pay for each link. There is no setup fee!

Links can be set up as word links, like "add to cart", "order now", or "donate" in any rich text area, including description text in Gallery Pages, and Grid Pages. They can also be set up as graphical buttons in Sidebar Extensions for general items or Grid Pages for specific items. In fact, PayPal links can be attached to any Media Object, anywhere in the site.

Here are the choices for configuring each link.

function: "single item", "add to cart", or "view cart".

"PayPal account email", which uses your account to process the order.

"Item name" is a description of the item, which will be shown as a line item in the checkout, and if it is a single item purchase, will likely be shown on the credit card statement as that.

"Item ID / number" is optional, and can be used to correspond to your business's product numbers or sales codes.

"Price" can be left blank if you want the visitor to put in an amount. For example, if you had some formula for shipping, or if the visitor needs to add tax, but depends on where they are ordering from, you can just have a note that explains how the shipping is calculated, and they put in that amount.

You can also just have one PayPal link as a general "send payment" link, and confirm the total via email with the client.

You can specify the currency in U.S. Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling, or Yen. If your desired currency is not listed, let us know, and we can add it, if Paypal supports it.

1-10 PayPal links at one time: $15 each

11-50 PayPal links at one time: $10 each

51+ PayPal links at one time: $5 each

The tracking link allows your statistic report, shown in your Access Site, to display specific activity for that link, namely how many times it was clicked on. This is useful for any type of link, including Quicklinks, so you know about traffic patterns to it, which normally would not be tracked.

You can specify a descriptive name for that link which will be displayed in your statistics report.

Any link can be changed into a password link, which will require the visitor to type in a password you specify to us, to access that link. The most popular link to protect with a password is an internal link, to a page or section that is normally not accessible via the menu.

Password authentication is performed on the server end, which means that it is impossible for someone to figure out the correct password by hacking the site or page, unlike many non-secure password pages, like you often have in traditional media-oriented "client approval" sections. We have done many tests, and have often been able to hack the password protecting the client approval sections of typical media sites, within 10 minutes.

The secure option causes information that IntelliFolios uses to activate a link, to NOT be transferred to the viewer until the correct password has been entered. The secure option is optional, and adds an extra step in the process, but really guarantees security.

The Profile Switch link is one of the most unique things that can be done with IntelliFolios.

You can have multiple Profiles set up in your IntelliFolios account. Each Profile is essentially a distinct version of a site. These versions of sites can share pages and media, and if it is edited in one site, that same item in the other site will be updated automatically. If we create a new master when editing, then there will be two separate items, independently editable for each Profile. Profiles are accessible via a direct link, but can also be accessed via a Profile Switch link. This is what we use for the "change design" demo in the www.mirlada.com site.

Here are some scenarios it can be used for:

  • Upon entering a site, the visitor is presented with either text links, or more interestingly, graphical buttons using a Grid Page or Rollover Page. Each button or link triggers a different Profile. These different profiles could be for different language versions of the site, showing info for different regions, or tailoring the information to either the visitor type (potential client, existing client, suppliers, the press, etc). A Quicklink can be set up to go back to that page, as to not use a main navigation item for it. That version can be accessed directly via unique domain, such as www.AcmeWidgetsUSA.com and www.AcmeWidgetsCanada.com, or by www.AcmeWidgets.com/USA and www.AcmeWidgets.com/Canada.
  •

  • Quicklinks can be used to switch between several language versions of the site. A flag button can be integrated into the Sidebar Extension, a branding area, or within the background of the site, to switch between languages.
  •

  • Choosing a simple and comprehensive version of the site, to suit the needs of different visitors
  •

  • Choosing a style of site design and manner of speaking, to suit different personalities, age groups, or professions.
  •

When specifying a Profile Switch, the destination page can be defined by section name, subsection name, and item name, so the visitor lands in the right place ever time.

The Navigation Link is used when you want the visitor to proceed to the next subsection, gallery item, or go back to the previous page. Instead of creating a unique link, with a unique path, for each link (which may have to be reconfigured if any section, subsection, or page names change) and adds extra complexity and cost, the navigation link is used as a relative path, and can be re-used in many different pages. So, theoretically, you wouldn't need more than three of these throughout your site, representing the three options.

    1) "Go to next subsection" is convenient if there is a hiding or cascading navigation.

    2) "Go to next item in the gallery" can be used as an alternative to the "next image" button.

    3) "Go to the previous page" acts just like the "back" button. It is great for hidden pages that are used for continued information about a topic, as these usually are not visible in the menu, and sometimes visitors may get disoriented.

This allows an unlimited number of links to be triggered at once. For example, if you want an Internal Link or Navigation Link to also show a popup notice, this would be used to activate both links at the same time.

You can also have a file download or another site open, while activating another page.

This is mainly used to toggle between full-screen and minimal window size mode. Yes, it is fairly esoteric, but kind of neat.

    Here are all the choices:

  • close the current window
  • make the current window full-screen
  • make the current window small
  • toggle the current window size between full-screen and small
